The Challenge

When a major retailer decided to enter a non-English-speaking market, they were required to translate tens of thousands of product text strings into a foreign language on a weekly basis.

They turned to Prisma's LexAI system to get the job done.

The Analysis

Large retailers typically use SAP-type systems to manage millions of SKUs in their Product Information Management (PIM) systems, many thousands of which change every week.

A major retailer entering a non-English-speaking market had to ensure that detailed product information ("article data") was translated with the speed and accuracy required to keep up with the weekly changes to tens of thousands of SKUs.

While automation was critical to meeting the achieving volume and speed requirements, human oversight was essential to ensure that language quality levels were maintained, especially in handling the many cultural aspects that come into play in product descriptions and marketing information contained within SKU content.

The Implementation

Prisma's Language Ops team began by building a secure "pipe" to bring PIM data into LexAI's translation environment, filter on key criteria to ensure that only new or modified SKUs were included.

SKUs are highly structured: some fields require translation, and other must be left untouched. Our team created a SKU data model that identified the specific fields for translation, and routed those through a translation engine that combined translation memory (TM), machine translation (MT) and Human translation expertise. Tags and markers kept all data organized and intact throughout the process, with many QC checks along the way.

Finally, the translated SKUs were exported back into the retailer's PIM system, ready for deployment in the systems and on the shelves of stores across the country, fully localized and compliant with all regulatory requirements mandated by the target country.
